Sandra Félix
Meet your instructor
Sandra Félix has been a small animal veterinary nurse for the past 14 years.
In 2006, she started as a veterinary nurse student in Portugal, at the Escola Superior Agrária de Elvas (Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre) and three years later (2009), she obtained her degree in Veterinary Nursing, with a final report on the subject “Pain Management and Palliative Care in Small Animals”. Pain was always a subject that fascinated Sandra, and she always wanted to learn more about it, not only because it was an issue that was not deeply explored in her classes at university, but also because she always felt that understanding it would make an enormous difference in the life quality of her future patients.
After obtaining her degree, Sandra worked for a year in a private small animal practice at her hometown (Évora, Portugal). In 2011 she started working at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Veterinary Medicine Faculty of Lisbon, where she worked as a small animal veterinary nurse for about five years. While working at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, she was also able to complete a six-month post-graduation for vet nurses in Practical Techniques, provided by Improve International.
In 2016, Sandra moved to Germany to start working in a private small animal veterinary referral hospital, where she is still currently working exclusively with inpatients, and with a special focus on the critically ill ones. In 2019, she achieved the Vets Now Certificate of Veterinary Nursing in Emergency and Critical Care (CertVNECC).
Sandra also has a project with another portuguese veterinary nurse (Ana Sêco): a podcast, entitled “Vet Nurse FM”, in which the main goals are to create a community/network for portuguese speaking veterinary nurses around the world, to support and motivate them and to share experiences and knowledge.
Sandra was the recipient of the WSAVA Teach the Teacher Scholarship for Veterinary Nurses/Techinicians. In the first phase of the scholarship, she spent 3 months (September to November 2022) at the North Carolina State University and Comparative Pain Research and Education Centre and Integrated Pain Management Service, USA, where she was tutored by Dr Duncan Lascelles.
