Biography

Dr. Ann Therese “Tess” Kommedal graduated from the Faculty of veterinary medicine in Budapest, Hungary in 2003. She started a rotational internship in small animal surgery and medicine at the University of Florida in 2005, followed by a residency in shelter medicine and a Master’s degree in Preventive Veterinary Medicine program at the University of California, Davis in 2006-2009. Upon completion of her shelter medicine training, Dr. Kommedal worked as a clinical assistant professor in shelter medicine at the University of Ohio, School of Veterinary Medicine, and Chief Veterinarian at the Capital Area Humane Society in Columbus, Ohio. In 2010 Dr. Kommedal returned to California to woek as an associate veterinarian in shelter medicine at the Marin Humane Society and the Koret Shelter Medicine Program at UC Davis. In 2011 Dr. Kommedal returned home to Norway to work in small animal general practice while continuing to educate veterinarians and owners about shelter medicine and animal welfare. In 2018 she released the Field Manual for Small Animal medicine with Katherine Polak, a textbook for veterinarians and volunteers working in low resource communities. She works with AWAKE International, a Swedish NGO working to educate veterinarians in the third world, and is currently serving as co-chair for the WSAVA AWWC. She represents WSAVA in the International Companion Animal Management coalition (ICAM).
